Creating a Corpus-based Teaching Material
Hello everyone! For this post, we, Ozan and Yavuz Selim Teacher, aimed to create corpus-based teaching material. These materials are educational resources developed using a corpus—a large collection of real-life language data. They provide authentic examples of language use, focusing on common vocabulary, grammar patterns, and contextual usage observed in the corpus. By emphasizing frequency and real-world contexts, they help students prioritize practical language skills and bridge the gap between theoretical grammar and everyday usage. To start, we prepared a gap-filling activity featuring various connectors, such as as a result, thus, owing to, and because of. Since these connectors can have different meanings depending on the context, students may experience confusion when selecting the correct option. To address this, we demonstrated how to use English-corpora.org to better understand their usage in the worksheet we prepared. Screenshots of the website were included to guide students through the instructions. After rewriting sentences using the given connectors and substituting them with others that have similar meanings (e.g., cause/effect connectors), students will write their own sentences from scratch using the corpus tool. By integrating corpus-based activities into the classroom, we empower students to engage with authentic language and develop a deeper understanding of its practical usage. Tools like English-corpora.org not only enhance their ability to analyze language patterns but also encourage independent learning and critical thinking. This hands-on approach helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, equipping learners with skills that are essential for effective communication. We hope this activity inspires both students and educators to explore the vast potential of corpus-based learning!
