Goodbye!

Goodbye! Hello everyone, for the last time… As this term comes to an end, so does my journey with this blog, created as part of the course "Current Issues." This course has been a valuable learning experience with both strengths and areas for improvement. Its greatest strength lies in its practical approach, helping us explore real-world applications of technology in education. However, its weakness might be the steep learning curve for students who haven’t taken the prerequisite technology course, as I experienced myself. While the theoretical content was easy to grasp, I initially struggled with technical tasks due to my lack of prior experience. Over time, with practice and my friend Belinay’s support, I adapted and even began to enjoy it. My favorite task was creating AR/VR-integrated teaching material, as it was innovative and exciting. On the other hand, troubleshooting technical issues during the flipped classroom video project was my least favorite, as it could be fr...

Creating a Corpus-based Teaching Material

Creating a Corpus-based Teaching Material      Hello everyone! For this post, we, Ozan and Yavuz Selim Teacher, aimed to create corpus-based teaching material. These materials are educational resources developed using a corpus—a large collection of real-life language data. They provide authentic examples of language use, focusing on common vocabulary, grammar patterns, and contextual usage observed in the corpus. By emphasizing frequency and real-world contexts, they help students prioritize practical language skills and bridge the gap between theoretical grammar and everyday usage. To start, we prepared a gap-filling activity featuring various connectors, such as as a result, thus, owing to, and because of. Since these connectors can have different meanings depending on the context, students may experience confusion when selecting the correct option. To address this, we demonstrated how to use English-corpora.org to better understand their usage in the worksheet we prep...

Creating AI-Integrated Lesson Plans

Creating AI-Integrated Lesson Plans Hello everyone, in this post, I will be talking about a lesson plan integrated with AI. "What is AI?" you may ask. Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think, learn, and make decisions. AI systems use algorithms and data to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as problem-solving, language understanding, and pattern recognition. With the help of developing technologies, AI can even be used for educational purposes. So, for this lesson, me and Belinay Teacher wanted to create a lesson plan using the AI tool called Monica. The lesson will start with a brainstorming activity that will help students think critically about one of the daily expressions we use: greetings! Then, they will continue by exploring the Monica AI application to create a unique postcard for their imaginary penpal, thinking about their penpal’s identity, where he/she lives, ...

Creating AR/VR Integrated Teaching Material

Creating AR/VR Integrated Teaching Material - Exploring the Magical City of Edinburgh      Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and innovation. Its heart beats along the Royal Mile, a historic street connecting the majestic Edinburgh Castle with Holyrood Palace. Walking down this mile feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by centuries-old architecture and stories etched into every stone. The Royal Mile isn’t just a visual feast; it’s a vibrant hub filled with local artisans, performers, and cozy cafés. Its charm deepens under Scotland’s ever-changing skies, which add drama and mystery to its cobbled streets. The city also celebrates creativity and culture, particularly during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Each August, the streets come alive with performers, laughter, and the magic of artistic expression. For those seeking knowledge, the National Museum of Scotland offers interactive exhibits spanning science, histo...

Creating an Instructional Video for the Flipped Instruction

Creating an Instructional Video for the Flipped Instruction      Hello everyone, in this post, I will share the details of "Flipped Classroom" and our grammar teaching activity based on this approach. Before I start, I want to talk about what a flipped classroom is. It is a teaching strategy in which students learn new information outside of class, usually through videos or books, and then use class time for interactive activities such as discussions, problem solving, or collaborative work. In language classes, this strategy has various advantages. It allows for extra class time to practice communication skills, encourages participation through various activities, and gives possibilities for rapid feedback and personalized instruction. Outside of class, students can study at their own pace, focusing on basic concepts, while in-class activities emphasize higher-order abilities such as applying and synthesizing the concepts of language. However, this approach is not wi...
